Hare Krishna Vegetarian Cooking | Kundalini Yoga | Reflexology Treatment | Belly Dancing

Grow Your Own Organic Vegetables | Make Your Own Dreamcatcher | The Healing Power of Stories

St Joseph's Adult Education Programme has always felt that the Alternative Health sector has been out of the reach of the greater community. In an attempt to rectify the situation we offer courses in this field. The Programme hosted Yogi Bhajan, the main exponent of Kundalini yoga in the west on his first visit to South Africa. Tania Barbour presented a dance movement therapy workshop in a discipline not normally accessible to the general public. Due to popular demand, we have put together an extensive Alternative Health project for 2009. The practitioners, who are committed to bringing alternative health to the community, are all experts in their respective spheres and have graciously and generously offered their courses at a greatly reduced rate. The project has been featured twice on Free Spirit, SABC TV 2 and last year on the SABC 3 programme The Power Within.

Kundalini yoga in progress

KUNDALINI YOGA

It is based on techniques brought to the west by Yogi Bhajan. Please bring your own blanket, yoga mat and sarong. Wear loose fitting clothing. Our Kundalini yoga project has grown. Since the film “Beautiful as Butterflies”, about the healing process of four formerly abused women, we have been asked by state institutions to teach yoga there. We have been teaching at Valkenberg State Mental hospital maximum forensic Ward 20 and also Ward 11 for many years now, as well as at Lentegeur and Stikland mental hospitals.

Patwant has structured comprehensive 8 week modules with a specific focus for general classes.

Module 1: With this first module of the year we will work with Kundalini yoga kriya’s postures and meditations that work with the healing power of the breath, pranayama.

THE HEALING POWER OF STORIES

"Storytelling, you know, has a real function. The process of storytelling itself is a healing process, partly because you have someone there who is taking the time to tell you a story that has great meaning for them. Stories differ from advice, in that once you get them; they become a fabric of your whole soul. That is why they heal you." Alice Walker, author of The Colour Purple.

Session 1 - The healing power of stories.

Session 2 - Freeing your imagination through stories

Session 3 - Getting the bones of the story: storytelling as a craft

Session 4 - Finding your voice through stories

The Storyteller will be Roshan Isaacs.

REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT

Rachel Manjoo is a registered member of the South African Reflexology Society and the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa. Reflexology is an ancient foot massage based on the belief that different zones in the foot connect to specific organs and muscles via a network of nerves. Crystalline deposits form at the nerve endings within the foot as circulation in the foot slows down through illness, by wearing shoes, or through lack of exercise. By deep compression foot massage, the deposits are broken up, encouraging the whole body to function at peak efficiency. Reflexology reduces stress, improves circulation, hastens healing and helps fight disease. Aromatherapy massages are also available.
